![]() ![]() Realizing that accident investigators very rarely had the luxury of the first-hand observations of the cockpit crews involved in accidents, in 1953 an Australian aviation engineer, David Warren, built the first flight data recorder that also recorded the conversation of the cockpit crew. While recorded flight data continued to be important in understanding how new aircraft designs were performing purely from an engineering standpoint, with increasing numbers of people flying aboard commercial airliners by the 1950s – the challenge of understanding aviation accidents of production airplanes became the driving interest in understanding what – and why – things sometimes went wrong during flight. Because the container needed to be completely lightproof, some believe that this may have been the origin of the phrase “black box” as being synonymous with flight data recorder. In 1939, however, two French inventors developed a device that automatically recorded several flight parameters on slowly moving photographic film that was exposed to a thin beam of light bent by moving mirrors. In the case of the Wrights, they wanted to know how many turns the propellers had made during a flight, which was information that was useful in determining – and improving – the propulsive efficiency with the propellers.įor the most part, the next 40 years of flight data was primarily of interest to those engaged in building and testing new aircraft designs and that information was recorded by hand during the test flights, or in post-flight pilot observations. The RDI Kit comes standard with the ruggedized tablet preloaded with RDI application software, hand-strap and SRVIVR25 cable, all contained in a protective hard case with customized foam inserts.įrom the time that Wilbur and Orville Wright made their first powered flight in 1903, there has been a need to record flight data. Operators can also subscribe to the services offered by 元Harris for audio intelligibility, regulatory checks and the Flight Data Management (FDM) or Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) programs. To protect the integrity and confidentiality of the file contents, all files are securely retrieved, stored and transmitted to the operators’ flight safety departments. The cable that comes standard with the RDI has a rugged MIL-38999 connector on one end to fasten securely to the SRVIVR25 recorders and Ethernet RJ45 on the other end to interface to the RDI tablet. The RDI supports a 1GBit Ethernet interface, allowing much faster download speeds including supporting CVRs where recording times went from 2 hours of audio to 25 hours across 4 channels. ![]() The RDI tablet can be securely held with one palm using the hand strap, and has a large 8.1” HD touchscreen with sunlight-readable display and multiple touchscreen modes. The RDI hardware is a ruggedized tablet compliant to IP65 and MIL-STD-810G standards to withstand harsh environments. ![]()
